5.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad bike for the money. Impressive!!!, September 29, 2013

First off, I must say that I am very new to the road bike thing. I wanted to get my feet wet to prepare for the Hotter Than Hell in Wichita Falls Texas in 2014. So I took the plunge on this entry level ride. Central Texas is unforgiving, road wise. What we lack in natural terrain features we more than make up for in road debris and crappy roadways. With that out there, I hope that this posting serves as a decent review for would be buyers. While the internet is a valuable resource, researching this bike is fruitless. I have been unable to find anything of any value. So I relied on Amazon customer reviews to pull the trigger. To start, UPS delivered on a Wednesday afternoon. I immediately noticed shipping container damage. The package they say weighed 35 lbs. It did feel lighter. Unpacking this bike was easy. I did note damage ( large deep scratch) to the stem and the right sided handlebar tape was undone because of a broken end cap. Oh well. Assembly was easy, very easy. 15-20 minutes... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Entry-Level Road Bike, July 30, 2013

I've had this bike for a few weeks now and I love it! I was looking for an entry level bike and visited a few bike shops. They all tried to get me to spend close to $1,000. My concern was spending a thousand bucks and not using it as much as I thought I would. Also, I thought if I really liked riding I might want a really nice bike and the trade in on a $1,000 bike would be $250 if I was lucky (this was confirmed by my local bike shop). This bike fits the bill, this is a good looking bike with Shimano parts and although it is not as light as a Trek or Specialized still it is light. Let's face it I'm not ready for the tour yet so 2 lbs more is not that big of a deal to me. I've logged about 50 miles so far and am enjoying it. I plan to change the seat, it is not great at all. The advice I would give is take it to a bike shop to be assembled or tuned up at your local bike shop before you go on any significant ride. When I received my bike the rear wheel was not straight, the... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Vilano Shadow: Good deal., June 20, 2013

I live in DC and need a full time commuting device that can get rained on, scraped against parking meters, and eventually stolen. After years of riding (and destroying) rusty, French road bikes from garage sales, I decided to try taking something from factory to scrapheap myself. This looks like a good choice. Here are some thoughts:

The bike was thoughtfully wrapped and boxed. I only noticed one scrape on the front rim, neither trivial nor catastrophic. As everyone says in other Vilano reviews, the assembly instructions (online and in the box) are particularly useless, at least as to the--you know--assembly anatomy of the particular bike. For instance, I have never worked on an integrated headset, and this one feels a little tight--I have no idea (because there were no instructions) whether I could I have fixed this somehow when/before installing the handlebars. There's also a plastic ring on the headset, and I don't know if it's a gasket or packaging. Otherwise, the bike... Read more
